About US

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering studies started in the autumn of 1959 at the Technical Faculty in Skopje, within which the Department of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering was created. Due to the increased social demand for mechanical engineers in Republic of Macedonia, in 1965 within the Ss. Cyril and MethodiusUniversity, a separate Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was established with two divisions: Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

The development of studies in Mechanical Engineering brought about the necessity of establishing a separate Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and it dates from 1977 existing up to date. Within about five decades, the Faculty develops its own characteristics which to a large extent correspond with the visions of its founders, yet also reflecting the experience gained throughout its early stage of development.

The last reform of the Faculty's curriculum that was done in 2004 permitted the incorporation of new trends in the science of Mechanical Engineering. Today, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering offers educational process with incorporated new trends in European Higher Education Area, as an ECTS and postulates of Bologna Declaration. The offered study programs are according the demand of the industry sector for advanced engineering technologies and competitive economic growth of the Macedonian industry sector.

The Faculty has six institutes and one department, as follows: Institute of Production Mechanical Engineering with 5 laboratories; Institute of Mechanical Construction, Mechanization Machines and Vehicles with 3 laboratories; Institute of Thermo technology and Termoenergetics with 5 laboratories, Institute of Hydrotechnology, Pneumatics and Automatics with 2 laboratories; Institute of Welding and Welding Constructions with 4 laboratories; Institute of Mechanics with 1 laboratory and a Department of Mathematics and Information Technology. The Institutes are further divided into many well-equipped chairs and laboratories or working groups. Each Institute is chaired by a professor, who is responsible for its operation and high level of academic and professional conduct of its members. With the Faculty, there are also the IT Center and General services, as separate units.

In the educational process the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering offers two Bachelor’s degree programs: Bachelor of Science in MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (4 years studies) in the following majors: Production Engineering; Transport, Mechanization and Logistics; Thermal Engineering; Automatics and Fluid Engineering; Materials, Welding and Structure Engineering; Industrial Engineering and Management; Motor Vehicles; Power Engineering and Ecology; Mechatronics; and Bachelor of ENGINEERING (3 years studies) in the following majors: B.E. in Production Informatics, B.E. in Industrial Design, B.E. in Applied Thermal Engineering, B.E. in Hydraulics and Automatics, B.E. in Welding and Structural Design.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering offers postgraduate - master studies of Science in Mechanical Engineering in full time studies (1 year) in nine postgraduate study programs and part time studies (2 years) in six postgraduate study programs. The Faculty offers doctoral studies for Ph.D. in Technical Sciences.

Today the activity of the Faculty is accomplished by a staff of 126, of which 35 are full professors, 16 associate professors, 10 assistant professors, 8 assistants, 23 junior assistants, and the rest being research fellows, laboratory technicians and administrative and technical clerks. The Faculty continually pays attention to the professional and scholarly development of its staff.

In the academic 2008/2009 the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering enrolled 456 students in total in the first year, and so far 5704 students have graduated, 232 candidates completed postgraduate studies and 101 candidates obtained a Ph.D. Degree.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the organizer of Interdisciplinary Studies in Environmental Engineering, in the realization of which teaching staff from about ten faculties of the University take part.

Apart from its educational activity, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering undertakes research activities in the field of Mechanical Engineering. With its staff potentials, it represents a centre for the development of science, scientific thought and the application of science in the economy. The Faculty research activity is accomplished by participation in the realization of research projects and by means of writing masters theses and doctoral dissertations. As a result of the intensive research activity of the Faculty, lecturers and research fellows take part in a large number of international conferences, symposia and seminars in Macedonia and abroad: scientific and specialist papers and articles are published in domestic and foreign journals, collections and books. In recent years, 47 research projects have been realized at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering including: Centre for Research, Development and Continuous Education (CIRKO as abbreviation from the Macedonian language) project for improvement of the competitiveness of Macedonian SMEs in mechanical engineering industry in collaboration with USAID; Johnson Controls Training Centre; UNIDO an UN project – Macedonian National Centre for Cleaner Production; Macedonian Centre for Energy Efficiency -MACEF; Centre for Climate Changes; Ss. Cyril and Methodius University – Business Start-Up Centre (UKIM-BSC) and Web Lab: E-Learning Training Centre. Among the research projects are several TEMPUS projects: Master studies for Industrial Design and Marketing; Web-based Multimedia e-Learning for Applied Technology; Numerical Simulation Program in Mechanical Engineering; Development of Environmental Resources Engineering Curriculum; Creating R&D Capacities and Instruments for boosting Higher Education – Economy Cooperation; Matching competencies in higher education and economy: From competence catalogue to strategy and curriculum development; Master Studies and Continuing Education Network for Product Lifecycle Management with Sustainable Production.

Since its establishment the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has maintained an intensive international collaboration, which has been realized through participation in joint research projects, congresses, symposia, seminars and conferences, which have been organized by international institutions and by the Faculty itself. The Faculty more intensively collaborates with the Technical University in Berlin, the University of Bradford, Arizona State University, the Wroclaw Polytechnic, the Institute in St. Petersburg, IPA-Stuttgart, the Technical University in Sofia , the University of Belgrade, University of Ljubljana, University of Zagreb the Institute of Nuclear Sciences in Vincha (Institute of Thermotechnology and Energetics) and the Technical University in Darmstadt (Institute of Steel Constructions).

One of the principal activities that the Faculty has nurtured from its beginning is its applicative, activity, which is applicable and short-term in its character. It embraces a number of Mechanical Engineering technical questions, and numerous material production organizations take part in it as partners.

As part of the Institute of Mechanical Construction, Mechanization Machines and Vehicles at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering are operating one laboratory and one inspection body accredited by the Institute for Accreditation of Republic of Macedonia. The Laboratory for vehicles (force and moment of force) is first accredited calibration laboratory in Republic of Macedonia. Its first accreditation dates form 26.07.2005 according ISO17025 numbered LK-001 with scope for force up to 200 kN and moment of force up to 1000 Nm. The Inspection body for motor vehicles is accredited since 08.04.2008 according ISO17020 numbered IT-009. This Inspection body is first body of its type in Republic of Macedonia, with a scope of accreditation for conformity assessment of single inspected vehicle in categories L, M, N, O.

In the course of its development, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has paid particular attention to publishing activities. The Faculty is publishing The Informatory for future students at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering which is published every year since 1998, The Scientific Journal Mechanical Engineering which is being published for 27 years in Macedonian and in English together with several books, scientific monographs and lecture books.

In 1984 the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering – Skopje was awarded with the “11th October” National Award.
